More Possession = Better Team?
Not always.
Some of the strongest teams play with low possession. Counter-attacking teams often win with just 35-40% possession.
Classic example: Leicester City 2015-16 — they won the Premier League with average possession lower than their opponents.
When Possession Matters
Possession has value when:
- The ball-dominant team creates more xG— they're converting possession into real chances- Against high-pressing teams— low possession enables rapid counter-attacks- Cup finals— controlling the ball prevents the opponent from attacking
When Possession Doesn't Matter
- Defensive teams (Park The Bus) can win with 30% possession
- Fast transitions create space against high defensive lines
- Good goalkeeper + compact defense = fortress despite low possession
What Stats to Watch Instead?
1. xG— real quality of chances2. Shots on target / Total shots— offensive efficiency3. PPDA— defensive pressing intensity4. Shots conceded— opponent's chances created
Always look at a combination of stats — never possession alone.
